Exploring Arizona Mining Towns: A Spring Sunday Drive

Spring Sunday Drive: Exploring Arizona’s Historic Mining Towns (Part Two)
Arizona mining towns hold stories of metals, history and resilience. Welcome to part two of our spring Sunday drive through Arizona’s backroads. If you missed the first leg of the journey, [click here to read part one].
As we continue winding through the high desert highways, the Arizona landscape transforms dramatically. What begins with cactus-studded hills quickly shifts into rugged canyons and towering cliffs. There is stunning scenery as you head through the hills.
Purples, copper, yellows, greens and golds are made brilliant by the late afternoon sun.

Arizona Mining History
This region of Arizona is steeped in mining town history!
Silver was the first treasure pulled from these hills, but it was copper mining that built the towns and shaped the economy. Even today, copper is still actively mined here, leaving its mark on both the land and the local culture.
One thing notable about these old mining towns– while there seems to be much lack, there shines an abundance of wealth in community pride. Hints of defiance against struggle are treasures among the worn and weary, for those who stop to notice. To seek them out.

A Canyon Surprise
One roadside stop brought us to a rocky outcrop that seemed like nothing more than a rugged bluff. But just beyond, a steep canyon drops away, carved by a dry creek bed. This hidden spot is a favorite among local rock climbers. Can you spot the climber in the photo below? Arizona is full of unexpected adventures!

Journey’s End
After nearly eight hours of exploration, I made it safely back home with a memory card full of photos. I hope you enjoyed traveling with me through Arizona’s mining country. These images are just for you…to inspire, encourage, and bring a bit of adventure to your day.
Until next time, keep exploring.
