Letting go as a mom- finding strength in difficult times

“We have to let it go, I’m sorry, but there just isn’t another option…”

My eyes immediately flooded with tears, and I could barely breathe as I choked back the sobs. For this one item, my daughter’s piano, was the thing that broke the levee.

The wall of determination and defiance to stay strong in the face of so many recent months of struggle,— crumbled and left me weeping in the rubble.

My husband’s job loss last summer, hitting our last weeks of money, having to accept an offer to sell our home, and no clue what is next?

Those things, all of them, while not easy…I’ve been fighting HARD to keep my head afloat. To find joy in the everyday, because there IS so much to be thankful for.

But this, oh how it broke my heart!

This beautiful instrument of wood and wire and song has meant so very much to our lives. My life. My mama’s heart.

Our youngest has been playing on this piano since she was a tiny 5-year-old,  Now, she is a new bride. Every year, the skill progressed and delighted my spirit.

Does going through hard times make you stronger?

A piano seems a funny thing perhaps to let go of, a sentimental item at best. Not for me.

For this particular child, the piano was a barometer of her spirit.

Her mama could always tell so much by her touch on the keys, the songs she chose, the dry seasons of her hurts where the keys grew dusty.

Giving away this piano, felt like I am giving away her childhood.  On a weird level, her. My opportunity to ever hear her play again.

I know people often think I am strong. And by God’s grace, I usually am. But we all have a breaking point. Even that holds it’s own kind of beauty.

Brokenness is where we can share our vulnerability. It allows us to let others comfort us, sometimes just by truly hearing our hearts. Then, the healing can begin.

Psalm 46:1  God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

How to stay strong emotionally

Strength isn’t about never getting knocked down.

Just like this piano came to our family, a gift, we found a young family that also doesn’t have a piano today.

Tonight, her husband will come to pick it up and I delight in imagining the potential joy her family will know from this instrument.

Sharing a gift that keeps giving is one of the greatest opportunities to let go of what is hard to say goodbye to…

Proverbs 31:25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

So, we’re not as strong as people might think, and isn’t it wonderful! We are on this journey together, and freedom is found in vulnerability.

Your turn- is there something precious you just can’t imagine parting with? What is it, and why?

Lovely words from an even more lovely soul!
