Finding Beauty In Abandonded- Photography

Last week we ran into an unexpected series of challenges beginning our vacation.

Our American Airlines pilot announced near the end of our first leg, that instead of landing in our layover city of Dallas, we’d be rerouted to Tulsa for fuel. An unexpected storm had popped up in Texas preventing landings.

Our beautiful sunset was a happy distraction. Upon landing in Dallas, we had the WORST customer service ever. These people pulled serious attitude and disrespect. We were informed we’d missed our flight.

Now, it was just after 11 pm and no other flights were headed out to Colorado. Especially not to our small destination of Durango.

The next flight we could get out on was Thursday evening at 10 pm. Um, it was Tuesday.

48 hours, two whole days of vacation checked off our itinerary with zero compassion. No offer of hotel, food voucher, or even a toothbrush. They actually told us, with dramatic sighs, how tired they were and should be out having fun.

Two hours later we realized our best bet was to rent a car. Very long story a bit shorter, we drove to Durango. Almost 15 hours, mucho $$$, and 1 speeding ticket later.

PSA: Texas takes 7 miles an hour over VERY seriously. It was like we were in Dukes of Hazzard! We had no sleep, emptier pockets, and the necessity to drive onward.

But you know what? We realized we were together, still. On our 27-year coming trip. We could enjoy it and each other, or stew all day.

As the sun came fully up, we crossed the state line into New Mexico. It is vast and open land, and slowly the hills and buttes became part of the passing scenery.

It was beautiful.

And don’t you know God provided a little extra treat? You know my passion for abandoned buildings… a little life Wabi-Sabi.

Right in the middle of what seemed like nowhere, an exit leading to this treasure.

If you are unfamiliar with Southwestern architectural features, makes sure to look closely for the layers.

There was no sound but the wind, and lizards scrambling around the bushes.

I hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

  1. I am thoroughly enjoying your posts. I do LOVE photos. They “speak” and allow us to have a glimpse of what you experienced. We get to enjoy your trip, too!

    1. Oh Marita, you can’t begin to know how I needed this encouraging word today. Sometimes working on these is so incredibly time consuming, and I do it because I love it and care about readers enjoying it also. But the nagging voice sneaks in, wondering if anyone really sees them. Thank you so much ♥
