Why We Can’t Appreciate Life Without Challenge

Why We Can't Appreciate Life Without challenge

We want things to go smoothly.

Reaching, ever stretching to grab hold of that smooth ride. Just…over…that…hump.

We splash through the murky bottoms of strife, and hang on for dear life as we begin again to ascend.

Click. click. click.

Our heart beats with anticipation as we climb higher. We are almost there…and the thrill is palpable.

We can’t stay at the top though- you know the saying. What goes up, must come down. We will come down again.

I can think of one excellent reason why we can’t fully embrace life without descent.

Appreciation If we stayed at the top of things, only gazing at the vastness of that brief smooth moment…would we appreciate it?

I contend that our attentions would become calloused. So used to the view, it would lose the very thrill of reaching it.

Just another view.

Those drops are tough. Our eyes sting with the splash, we get wet with undesired spray of dirty living.

But without that impact, would we-  could we   – grasp the thrill of arriving at the top?

“I live to enjoy life by the littlest things, feeling the grass between my toes, breathing fresh air, watching the wind sway the trees, enjoying the company of loved ones, a deep conversation, getting lost in a good book, going for a walk in nature, watching my kids grow up. Just the feeling itself of being alive, the absolute amazing fact that we are here right now, breathing, thinking, doing.”

  1. Right you are, young lady! And after the descent we rise again…
Hopefully with a deeper appreciation of what’s at the top!

  2. So, true, Christa, so true!! However, sometimes like Anne, I would love to go straight for a while. However, now that I think of it, the times I did seem to be going straight, were straight through a very long valley. Ugh. And then the thrill of the top? Sometimes I think I must be afraid of heights because I seem to stop before I ever get there. I’m a mess. But a very grateful mess, indeed.
